Sivaji blazes success trail for Tamil films

The battle for overseas rights and investment in Indian cinema is moving away from Hindi cinema. So far, Bollywood has never had a serious challenge on the overseas territories from any other cinema originating from India. A few niche territories like Mithun Chakraborty, who found a huge fan following in Russia, and Rajnikant in Japan were exceptions rather than the rule. Sivaji has changed all that. When the trade talks of Rs 100-crore turnover and more, the potential is serious. And overseas markets have been swift to cash in on this.

London-based Eros International has entered into a JV with Ayngaran International, another London-based overseas distributor. Both have been in distribution for over two decades and have a huge slate of libraries. Sivaji was the first project of this new JV as well as the first investment and foray into Tamil cinema for Eros. “We got the rights very cheap and we did this through a JV with Ayngaran International,” said Jyoti Deshpande, COO, Eros International.
Following the phenomenal success of Sivaji, the JV will look into both distribution and production of Tamil films. An official announcement is expected to be made over the next couple of days.

“All future business regarding films will be an Ayngaran-Eros production, starting with Sivaji. With this new venture, Ayngaran could play a major role in the future of the Tamil film industry,” Rohan Manickavasagar, CEO, Ayngaran International, told ET. Ayngaran’s production plans include films with southern stars like Vijay and Ajith for their initial productions. Ayngaran has been around for over two decades and was one of the first companies to recognise the potential of Tamil film distribution in the international market, both in the theatrical and home entertainment segments.

Initially catering to the needs of the vast Sri Lankan Tamil population spread across Europe and Australia, through Malaysia and Singapore, it reportedly has almost 2,000 films in its library at present.

Though exhibition is not part of their plans right now, Ayngaran does own two theatres in Singapore and is affiliated with 20 theatres, which regularly screen Tamil movies, in France, Sri Lanka, Dubai and Canada. It also has retail outlets for home entertainment distribution in London and Paris, besides an online presence.

It releases most of the Tamil films overseas in theatres and is said to possess exclusive overseas theatrical rights for almost 300 films. With the increasing Tamil presence across the globe, Ayngaran now releases Tamil films across several countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Dubai, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, UK, USA and Canada.

In fact, Sivaji, whose overseas rights were acquired by Ayngaran for around $2.5 million, has become the first Tamil film to be released in over 200 theatres in the overseas market. “All those who screened the film overseas has covered the cost by the third week of the film’s release,” said Mr Manickavasagar.

These include 56 theatres in Malaysia, where it was distributed by Pyramid Saimira, four theatres in Singapore, eight in Australia, 10 theatres in the Middle East, 20 screens together in France, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and Ireland, another 20 in the UK, and 75 theatres in the US.

Happy Birthday Sarath Kumar

Supreme Star Sarath Kumar celebrated his birthday with Radikaa yesterday.

This actor-politician entered films in negative roles, and went on to become the macho man of Kollywood. Known for his upright cop characters on screen, Sarath Kumar has made his mark in South Indian cinema.

He is also the President of the Actors’ Association. To raise funds for the association, he has initiated the 75 years of Tamil Cinema Celebrations which will be held in a grand and fitting manner next month in Singapore.

Married to the multitalented Radikaa, the actor has three daughters and one son.

Lakshyam set to hit the TARGET

The first and foremost goal of any filmmaker is always revenue and next comes the success factor. Of course, there is a version – If success comes, automatically the revenue follows. However, the target is the same. Some films come with hoopla and remain for a week or two, and suddenly taking the loop or altogether disappearing. Some films make steady progress in spite of divide talk and make it to the list of blockbusters. The recently-released Lakshyam surely comes under this category. On the first day, it generated divide talk with stress on its average-ness. But, the fact is the film continues to pull the crowds in big numbers at all the released centers. Director Sri Vaas succeeded in gripping screenplay with good commercial elements, though the story is criticized for being routine. Gopichand’s action, Anushka’s glamour and Mani Sharma’s music have armed the film with the required stamina to become a good hit in the coming days. Producer Nallamalupu Bujji and captain Vaas are on cloud nine with the film getting sudden charge from the audience.

Mumaith Khan's Maisamma to start this 16th

Mumaith Khan must be on cloud nine now. She has all the reasons to be so. She entered the industry as an item girl and turned into heroine. There are many heroines who went the other way but it is different for Mumaith Khan. She already played a key role in films like Evadithey Nakenti and a major role in the recent Operation Duryodhana also. Now she is playing lead role in a film titled after her - Maisamma. Dasari Narayana Rao is providing story for this film and Dasari Padma presents this film. Bharat will direct this film. Regular shooting of this film will start from 16th of this month. Prabhakar, who anchored TV program Yahoo and also acted in a few films, will play hero with Mumaith Khan for this film. It is heard that Dasari prepared a powerful lady oriented subject after a long time. Remember Osey Ramulamma penned and directed by Dasari Narayana Rao.

Chakri's praise for Sivaji's hairstyle

Satyabhama is running with good response in all released centers, said its unit members at a success meet organized at the office of DV Entertainments, Hyderabad. The film which the combination of Sivaji-Bhumika recurring, pulled the audience to the theatres in big numbers, particularly the youngsters and college students, its director Srihari Nanu maintained. He mentioned his thanks to Producer Gopi and music director Chakri for making him a director with this film and keeping confidence in him. Made on Lucky Media banner, the film was released on July 7th to inadequate talk due to lack of commercial elements. However, the director said the combination of Sivaji and Bhumika itself was a big commercial aspect in the film. Chakri said that in the stylish hairdo, hero Sivaji looked like Chiranjeevi. He said he watched the first morning show of the film at Sapthagiri theatre in the city, and was surprised to see excellent response from the audience. Sivaji said he was afraid of the film's success on the opening day, but the impression soon vanished with good collections following. Soma Vijaya Prakash, presenter of Satyabhama, story writer Nivas and Nizam area distributor Samba Siva Reddy took part in the success meet.

The unit of 'Lakshyam', a Nallamalupu Bujji-production staring Gopichand and Anushka, expressed happiness at the successful run of the film. The film entered the second week with record collections. Nallamalupu Bujji, Jagapati Babu, Gopichand, Anushka, director Sri Vaas and D Suresh Babu were among those who spoke at a success meet, held at Ramanaidu Studios, Hyderabad, today.

Gopichand maintained that Lakshyam was the best ever film in his career, which pulled a good crowd of family and mass audience combined together. He attributed the large turnout of women audiences at the theatres to Jagapathi Babu's charisma as he played a key role in the film. "A lot of people observed the chemistry between me and Jagapathi Babu is amazing as siblings".

Jagapati Babu said that when he wished to assist director Sri Vaas in his career, it indirectly got him a hatrick after Samanyudu and Pellaina Kothalo. D. Suresh Babu observed that all segments of the audiences liked the film. "Lakshyam has heralded a new beginning in multistarrer movies in Telugu once again". Balakrishna has always been famous in telugu film industry for his adventures with heroines. In the past when every other hero had single heroine in his movie, Balayya had two heroines along with him like in Nari nari naduma murari, Bobbili Simham,Bangaru bullodu etc.

Now when other heroes started having three heroines, Balakrishna started having four heroines like his new movie Okkamagadu.

Now Balakrishna has gone 8 steps ahead (one step for each heroine) of other heroes and is having 12 heroines in his next movie. Balakrishna is going to act with 12 heroines ( two in the lead and 10 in guest roles) in his next movie Ranga Panduranga. The movie is inspired from the great NTR’s Panduranga Mahathyam. Keeravani is providing the music for this movie. The regular shooting will start from September 2007.

Prakash Raj plays hero in 'Gadi No. 305 Lo Devudu'

One of the great creative directors Shankar is used to do two films simultaneously. While he directs one movie, he encourages his protégés or other directors to direct small budget films on his own banner.

While Shankar was directing 'Aparichitudu', he promoted his protégé to direct 'Premiste' simultaneously. When he was directing a heavy budget film like 'Sivaji', he promoted his student Simbudevan to direct a film 'Himsinche 23 va Raju Pulakesi'.

Likewise, Shankar is producing a film with Prakash Raj in the lead role under the direction of Simbudevan again and the title of the movie is 'Gadi No.305 Lo Devudu' in both Tamil and Telugu languages.

Prakash Raj is going to appear in the film as Lord Vishnu.

Vidyasgar is going to score music for the film.

'Aapadamokkulavadu' Movie Launched With Suman in Main Role

The shooting of 'Aapadamokkulavadu' directed and produced by Posani Krishnamurali on the banner of Aman International Movies with Nagababu in the lead role, was formally launched with puja activities on July 12.

Speaking to the media, Posani says, 'This is a film that runs with politics as its backdrop. We are trying to portray the real life incidents in the present day society through this movie. The hero, basically a farmer from Guntur district, would appear in a character, which saves the politics from the rowdyism. The regular shooting of the film would start by the end of July. The story is almost like a tailor-made for Nagababu. We are introducing Lenina Choudary, a singer by profession, as music director through this flick.'

Nagababu says, 'There are five songs in the film and the movie would attract the womenfolk most. I am playing the title role in the film.'

Koratala Siva is scripting dialogues for the movie.

Young Suhani is plain unlucky. The girl who became famous with the song Tooneega… Tooneega… turned 16 recently and was touted as the rising star and was mobbed by producers. She was even named as Bapu Bomma for his new film. However, she lost that opportunity as Bapu decided to opt for Charmee instead. Luck continues to eluder her. She was signed up to play the lead role opposite Nitin in the film “Takkari” with Amma Rajashekar.

Now she is said to be out of this film as well. While no reason has been cited, many say that the director was not happy with her performance and is now said to be on the lookout for a replacement. Bad luck, Suhani.

Pomp and gaiety marked the much-awaited audio launch of “Yamadonga”, an SS Rajamouli-NTR combine project tonight at Hotel Marriot (formerly Hotel Viceroy near Tank Bund), Hyderabad. Union Minister Dr. Narayana Rao and ace director K. Raghavendra Rao were the chief guests. They jointly released the audio of the film and presented the numbers to the unit members. MM Keeravani scored the music for this album. Vel Records is marketing it. The function was attended by about 2000 gathering, including the fans of NTR and Mohan Babu. Cultural programs, including parody of Chitragupta, enthralled one and all.

Almost all the cast and crew of Yamadonga were present, with NTR, Mohan Babu, Mamta Mohandas and Priyamani stealing the limelight. The guests included State minister Maganti Babu, K. Raghavendra Rao, Ravi Teja, K. Sekhar Babu, D. Suresh Babu, Archana, Surender Reddy, Bommarillu Bhaskar, Ali, V. Doraswamy Raju, Vijayendra Prasad, Srinivasa Reddy, Sameer Reddy and others.

The film is made on Viswamitra Creations with Cherry and Urmila Gunnam as the producers.

Mandira Bedi’s standard turned out to be too high for director Kuchipudi Venkat for his film “John Appa Rao 40 Plus”. Though initially Mandira said yes to the project, later on after realizing that Krsihan Bhagwan is a mere comedian and not a big actor, the actress decided to shun herself from the project. Mandira has already become a household name by hosting cricket world cup shows on television Her aim is to be a sensation on Bollywood portraying special glamour and oomph in her own way. She is already a known figure among International circuit and is not ready to do something which will tarnish her image and this was one of the reasons the actress backed up after knowing she is acting with a stand up comedian and not a big star.

Prince is Prince

Mega Star Chiranjeevi acted as the brand ambassador for Thums Up some time ago, while Pawan Kalyan did the same for Pepsi. Even today, the Mega Star is the brand ambassador for Navaratan Oil.

Now, Maheshbabu is also treading the same path and following the footsteps of Chiranjeevi.

After Mega Star, it was the Prince, who was acting as brand ambassador. It is also reliably learnt that Maheshbabu signed the dotted line for being a brand ambassador for Hero Honda two-wheeler.

The Prince had also reportedly signed an agreement to act in three films to be produced by UTV.

So far, the north Indian stars used to sign such agreements with big firms. Addlabs also signed an agreement with Hrithik Roshan.

Whatever it may be, Prince Maheshbabu, had started a new practice by signing an agreement to play in films with a huge film making company. So, Prince is Prince.

'Pellikaani Prasad' shooting in progress

A song 'Sorry Sorry Bangaree…' scripted by Bhaskarabhatla Ravikumar, was canned on 'Allari' Naresh and Sridevi for 'Pellikaani Prasad' under the choreography of Prem Rakshit recently at Ramoji Film City.

Produced by Ramesh Alapati and Soma Vijayprakash on the banner of Godavari Films, introducing Satyam Dwarapudi as director, 'Pellikaani Prasad' has Sivaji, 'Allari' Naresh and Sridevi (daughter of Manjula) in the lead.

The unit is getting ready to choreograph another song on Saresh and Sridevi from July 18. With this the film would wrap up the shooting.

Who will be the Pellikaani Prasad among Sivaji and Naresh and the problems faced by that Prasad is a suspense. The producers are making efforts to launch the audio by the second half of August and the film would be released by the end of August.

Camera is by Ajji and music is by Sri. Noted director cum producer EVV Satyanarayana selected the title for this movie.

Telugu movie “Satyabhama” , with Bhumika and Shivaji in the lead roles, directed by Srihari Nanu, has an innovative story based on the Hollywood flick 50 First Dates. Though the style of narration is new, the speed of narration is dampening the mood of the audience. Its collections ranged between 40-50% in the first week in A centres. Critics say that inspite of good performances by Bhumika and Shivaji, lack of entertainment elements is keeping the crowds away. Trade circles predict losses for this film. Some analysts feel that if female viewers take a fancy for Bhumika’s role, Satyabhama may still get a chance to recover.

Surya-Asin starrer by Vijayadasami

Surya and Asin proved to be a successful combination and a hit pair with 'Gajini' both in Tamil and Telugu languages. Now the two are pairing up again for a film being directed by Hari of 'Swami, Aaru and Bharani'-fame.

The film is all set for release by the ensuing Dasara festival in Tamil and Telugu languages.

The Telugu version of the movie is being presented by Bellamkonda Suresh on the banner of Aiswarya Art Creations Pvt Ltd. KVV Satyanarayana and S Panduranga Rao are jointly producing the film.

'Vel' is the title confirmed for the Tamil version, while the Telugu title is yet to be announced. The shooting of the film is going on at a brisk pace in Chennai.

While the Surya-Asin pair is the main highlight, Hari's direction and Yuan Shankar Raja's music would be an added attraction.
